ULTRATUBE Ultrasonic Testing Systems Pass Pre-Shipment Tests and Are Shipped to the Customer

ULTRATUBE automated ultrasonic testing systems for seamless pipes have successfully passed pre-shipment testing and have been shipped to the customer. The systems perform automated ultrasonic inspection of the pipe body and ends, detecting longitudinal and transverse defects and laminations, measuring wall thickness, and detecting surface longitudinal defects oriented at up to ±36° to the pipe axis.
Key specifications
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Pipe diameter range | 73.0–273.0 mm |
| Pipe wall thickness range | 5.0–35.0 mm |
| Wall thickness measurement accuracy | ±0.05 mm |
| Testing methods | pulse-echo method |
| mirror-shadow method | |
| multiple mirror-shadow method | |
| combinations thereof | |
| magnetic method | |
| Measurement rate (probe pulse repetition frequency) | over 4 kHz |
| Probe pulse frequency spectrum | 1.0–6.0 MHz |
Detection sensitivity
| Defect type | Reference reflector |
|---|---|
| Longitudinal and transverse defects | notch 5% of wall thickness deep and 25.0 mm long |
| Short deep surface defects | 1.6 mm diameter through-hole |
| Surface defects oriented at up to ±36° to the pipe axis | notch 0.5 mm deep for wall thickness up to 16 mm |
| notch 5% of wall thickness deep for walls over 16 mm | |
| Laminations | flat-bottom hole 3 mm in diameter (D3E) and larger |
| Magnetic method | 1.6 mm diameter through-hole |
| longitudinal and transverse notches 5% of wall thickness deep |
Combining ultrasonic and magnetic methods enables detection of both internal and surface defects.
